The Volkswagen Microbus was one of the funniest and most iconic vehicles of the peace-loving 1960s and 70s, and now it is making a comeback in the 2020s. And reportedly this car will be introduced as an electric car. It then just appeared in full production form years after the highly praised concept version was first unveiled. That's why it's so important that Volkswagen has clarified the release date for 2024 Volkswagen ID.Buzz, which today has been confirmed for release in the US market next year 2023 by Carsten Intra, namely as head of Volkswagen's commercial vehicles division.
This prototype looks very different from the concept, but it's very much in line with the details seen in spy shots of the test vehicle. The production ID.Buzz will use the same MEB platform as the ID.4 and ID.5, as well as the European market ID.3 hatchback and the Audi Q4 E-Tron and Sportback SUVs. We also know that passenger and cargo versions are planned, the latter was previewed by the ID.Buzz Cargo concept 2018.
VW may also use ID.Buzz in its autonomous taxi service starting in the year 2025. The automaker released a sketch of the self-driving ID.Buzz earlier this year, and announced the start of testing a few months later. The service will be run by VW Group's Moia mobility division, with an autonomous driving system developed by Argo AI, in which the VW Group is the main shareholder.
In Europe, the commercial version of the ID.Buzz will be available as a fully autonomous vehicle, but it will come a little later than the regular ID.Buzz and will likely never make it to the US as it will be the first fully autonomous VW Group car on the market. ID.Buzz will be built in Hannover, German, around 35 miles west of Wolfsburg, along with large, luxury electric SUVs that will be produced there for various Volkswagen Group brands.
