Otodiva – Hyundai The new generation Kona Electric will soon have the status of the 'most Indonesian' electric car. This electric car from the South Korean brand has succeeded in reaching the level of local content in the country (TKDN) highest compared to other electric car brands in Indonesia.
On Wednesday (3/7/2024), President Joko Widodo inaugurated the PT Hyundai LG Indonesia battery cell factory (HLI) Green Power in Karawang, West Java. The Hyundai Kona Electric is the first electric car to use batteries produced by PT Hyundai LG Indonesia (HLI) Green Power, so that the TKDN of this electric car has increased to 80%.
“By using domestically produced LG batteries in the Kona Electric, TKDN value for Battery-Based Electric Motor Vehicles (KBLBB) the initial one 40% rose much higher became 80%. This is the first step to encourage added value from domestic industry,” said Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan at the inauguration of PT HLI Green Power in Karawang, West Java, Wednesday (3/7/2024).
For your information, PT HLI Green Power is a joint venture company between Hyundai Motor Company, LG Energy Solution, and PT Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC). PT HLI Green Power's investment is a follow-up to the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Investment/BKPM and the Hyundai Consortium, LG, and IBC on 28 July 2021.
In September 2023, President Joko Widodo visited PT HLI Green Power to directly inspect the process and results of electric vehicle battery cell production. This battery cell factory is now officially operating on an area of land 330.000 square meters with first phase investment funds reaching USD 1,2 billion. This facility is capable of producing lithium-ion battery cells with total capacity 10 GWh per year, enough to meet the needs of more than 150.000 unit Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV).
In the second phase, which is expected to be completed in the year 2025, PT HLI plans to increase production capacity to 20 GWh. This second phase of investment is expected to cost around USD 2 billion.
With this newest ecosystem, Hyundai is the first manufacturer in Indonesia and ASEAN to integrate the electric vehicle ecosystem. Indonesia now has a complete ecosystem for mass producing electric vehicles.
The existence of this battery cell factory is an important part of the supply chain to lead electrification in Indonesia. This is Hyundai's ongoing step in investing to build the electric vehicle ecosystem and supply chain in Indonesia, especially in increasing the capabilities of the domestic automotive components industry.
Since early June 2024, PT Hyundai Motors Indonesia (HMID) has officially started pre-booking services for the all-new Kona Electric. At a price of approx 500 millions, The all-new Kona Electric offers a driving range of more than 600 km.
“I am very proud that the Kona Electric made in Indonesia is also powered by batteries produced in Indonesia, as a result of business collaboration between Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution,” ujar Executive Chairman Hyundai Motor Group, Euisun Chung.
“The completion of the battery cell factory in Indonesia gives us all great pride. This is proof of the progress we have made and a sign of the strength of our shared partnership.” Euisun Chung continued.
“Most important, this confirms that by working together, Hyundai Motor Group and Indonesia are shaping the future of the EV ecosystem not just in Asia, but also around the world,” he stressed.
