BMW pulls more than 50.000 cars and SUVs from model year 2019 until 2021 to resolve software issues that may cause loss of braking assistance, which can increase the risk of accidents.
BMW also said that braking assist may temporarily not function, all affected vehicles and can maintain mechanical braking capability, will be improved later. This problem affects BMW vehicles as well as the Toyota Supra, which is mechanically similar to the BMW Z4 roadster.
If the user finds his car without braking assistance, the user must press the pedal harder to stop and the stopping distance must also be paid more attention to.
According to the automaker, Under certain starting conditions the engine management software can damage the oil/vacuum pump that supplies the vacuum allowing problems with the brake assist function (also called brake boost). Any of these conditions impact multiple systems such as :
- Press the engine start/stop button twice in quick succession.
- Press the brake pedal briefly while pressing the engine start/stop button.
BMW says that while both of these situations can ultimately result in a loss of brake assist, Full brake assist function will remain available for approximately two or three full brake applications, or about six full brake partial brake applications.
This problem became apparent after BMW experienced an increase in warranty claims at the beginning of this year. BMW conducted an internal engineering review of the claims between February and April.
A BMW spokesperson also said that the automaker was not aware of any accidents linked to this problem.
