Global tire company Hankook Tire became the first tire manufacturer to achieve International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus or International Sustainability and Carbon Certification. The prestigious certification is recognition of the implementation of sustainable principles throughout the supply chain, starting from the source of raw materials renewable to sustainable product results.
Hankook's achievements with ISCC PLUS are special because of the attributes behind the award of this certification. ISCC PLUS is an international sustainability certification program for bio-based and circular raw materials (recycle) under European Renewable Energy Directives (I RED) which evaluates the company's sustainability initiatives from raw materials, manufacturing process, and final product results.
ISCC is affiliated with 130 sustainable raw material producers, NGO, and research institutions around the world as members, is also the most reliable institution in the field of environmentally friendly certification with transparent screening standards and fairly strict certification procedures.
Hankook Tire's Geumsan factory achieved ISCC PLUS certification through its tandem efforts to replace petroleum-based oil (petroleum) with natural oils, as well as adopting renewable bio-based polymers from petrochemical-based synthetic rubber.
About the use of natural oils, Certification for each process is important to have, starting from natural raw material sources, manufacturing, and qualified production. Biopolimer, unlike the process of making conventional chemical products, namely using less petroleum and compensating for it with recycled oil, like cooking oil. The process of heating non-petroleum oil will help reduce carbon emissions.
The complex process by which Hankook Tire achieved sustainability certification for raw materials was realized through the presence of the environmentally friendly Kinergy 4S tire 2 all-weather for passenger cars and Kinergy 4S 2X for SUVs.
Kinergy 4S 2 and Kinergy 4S 2X brings improved performance compared to its predecessor by highlighting the best quality of this unique raw material. Rubber made from natural oils maintains the characteristics of the material at low temperatures, thus improving driver performance in snowy road conditions.
This special feature makes Hankook Tire become Manufacturer of the Year 2021 in the tire category all-season from Auto Bild magazine. This is in line with the Hankook Kinergy 4S passenger car tire 2 all-season which was crowned the winner in Auto Bild Allrad's main tire test.
“We are honored to receive this high award from ISCC for our commitment to being the gold standard in sustainability,” said Sooil Lee, President and CEO of Hankook Tire & Technoloogy. “This certification reflects our focus on improving all aspects of our business to have a positive impact on the planet, public, and also our lives."
